Bay Tales Live #2

Giving up the Day Job:

A Panel Discussion

Wednesday Feb 10, 2021 07:30 PM

What made a solicitor, a journalist and a detective decide to try writing fiction? And what happened next?

For our second Bay Tales Live we’re joined by Steve Cavanagh (the Eddie Flynn series) Neil Broadfoot (the McGregor and Drummond series) and Tony Hutchinson (the Dark Tides thrillers) in what’s sure to be a fascinating panel discussion as they tell us what got them writing, how their ‘day jobs’ helped or hindered them when they started out, and how it has influenced their writing since. Find out about:

  • their approaches to writing and how their former jobs help…or hinder
  • what others get right and wrong about their former professions…and whether it matters
  • and, of course, their series and stand-alone books that have thrilled millions.

Steve Cavanagh is the bestselling author of the Eddie Flynn novels and standalone thrillers. He has won the Crime Writers Association Gold Dagger for crime novel of the year (The Liar), and the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year (Thirteen) 2019. A former lawyer, he was born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Neil Broadfoot’s debut, Falling Fast, was shortlisted for both the Dundee International Prize and the prestigious Deanston Scottish Crime Book of the Year Award. Before writing fiction, Neil worked as a journalist for fifteen years at both national and local newspapers, covering some of the biggest stories of the day.

Tony Hutchinson’s police career had involved 40 murder investigations by the time he led the ‘Canoe Man’ John Darwin investigation – a case that made international headlines. Since retiring from the force, Tony has brought his inside knowledge to his Dark Tides series – described as police procedural that’s ‘accurate, honest and bang up to date’
